Preventative dentistry is focused on maintaining the health of your teeth and gums and preventing oral issues like gum disease, tooth decay, or infections from occurring or developing. Preventive dental care encompasses various tools and procedures used or performed by a dentist such as routine cleanings and checkups, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants, as well as at-home routines.

Some of the most common preventive tools and treatments we use to help our patients maintain healthy and aesthetically-pleasing smiles include:

Dental X-rays enable us to spot the early onset of many dental concerns, even when there are no visible signs. Some of the issues we can identify using X-rays include:

  • Cracked and fractured teeth
  • Jawbone deterioration
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Formation of cysts and abscess
  • Hidden cavities

Dental cleaning is crucial for maintaining your oral health and preventing cavities, gum disease, and oral infections. Bacteria accumulate on the surface of the teeth, and if they aren’t removed regularly, they create plaque deposits. Over time, plaque hardens and forms dark tartar patches. Plaque and tartar are the most prominent causes of cavities and gum diseases such as periodontitis and gingivitis.

When you come in for a dental cleaning at Dental Aesthetic, we will use special instruments to gently but thoroughly clean your teeth. Using these instruments, we can reach the areas your toothbrush and floss cannot normally reach and scrape the plaque and tartar deposits off the entire surface of your teeth.

If you need a deep cleaning, we will use a technique called scaling and root planing. For this procedure, we use a hand-held scaler to scrape the plaque and bacteria accumulated between the gums and the root surface. In some cases, we may use an ultrasonic scaling device. The ultrasonic waves produced by the device are used to dislodge the plaque deposits and break them, thereby cleaning the surface of the teeth.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that is also found in drinking water and dental care products like toothpaste. Fluoride deficiency can weaken the teeth and make them more vulnerable to cavities. To strengthen the teeth and protect them against tooth decay, our dentist performs fluoride treatments.

Oral cancer is mostly caused due to chewing tobacco and smoking. If detected during its early stages, it can be treated more effectively. During an oral cancer screening, our dentist checks for signs of redness, ulcers, cysts, lumps, bleeding or swollen gums, etc. If any of the primary signs of this disease are identified, then the dentist will refer you to a specialist for further testing.

Sealants are applied to the biting surface of molars and premolars. They keep residual food particles and bacteria from getting deposited on the tooth surface and prevent cavities.

Gingivitis and periodontitis, the most common forms of gum disease, can indirectly affect your overall health and can quickly develop and even lead to tooth loss. During your routine checkup, our dentist will perform a gum disease screening. They will check for signs such as bleeding, gum recession, inflammation, redness, cysts and tumors, and the release of pus from the gums.

Regular exams and checkups are essential preventative dental care procedures. These regular checkups allow the dentist to identify the early onset of any dental issues and recommend proper treatment.

During your routine exam, you will also be able to discuss with the dentist about any concerns you may have or cosmetic improvements you are considering for your smile. We will also provide advice on how to properly brush and floss to keep dental issues at bay.
